Wollongong Day Surgery re-opened after a multimillion-dollar upgrade, and more significant projects underway across Australia
The AU$23 million redevelopment of Wollongong Day Surgery was officially opened recently, an important addition to the Wollongong health precinct. The new additions provide patients and specialists with modern Consulting Suites, four operating theatres, an expanded recovery area, and importantly offstreet parking for those with mobility issues.
Located right next door to Wollongong Hospital the Day Surgery offers a range of services including endoscopy, eye surgery, maxillofacial, gynaecology, orthopaedics, urology, dental, ENT, dermatology, and plastics and reconstructive surgery.
“There’s clearly been demand here for a long time for additional day surgery services. The day surgery has been here for 30 years and the facility was at capacity. Now we have doubled the capacity in our operating theatres, and can see an additional 500 patients a month,” said Wollongong Day Surgery CEO, Marc Monsell.
As pressure continues to mount on the public health sector, Wollongong Day Surgery’s reopening comes at an ideal time to support the needs of patients locally. “We’ve been assisting the public hospital with the backlog of elective surgery due to COVID restrictions, and we wouldn’t have been able to offer that prior to the expansion,” says Marc.
In addition, the countdown is well and truly on for the unveiling of Stage 1 of the new AU$32 million Gosford Private Hospital redevelopment. In the coming weeks, the staff will start welcoming the first patients to the newly designed day surgery and maternity units. More expansion, upgrade and redevelopment are now well under way.

Life-saving new treatment introduced to multiple Healthe Care hospitals
Our Healthecare Australia recently had a key addition to the healthcare services available on the NSW Mid North Coast. The teams at Forster and Mayo Private Hospitals will join with their counterparts at Manning Base Hospital, as part of a newly announced partnership to deliver radiation therapy services to more than 95,000 cancer sufferers in the region. It is part of an AU$ 5-million-dollar investment from the federal government.
The new service will add to the oncology programs already on offer, and reduce the need for local patients to travel to Port Macquarie or Newcastle for their treatment. For the first time, cancer patients in the Manning-Great Lakes will be able to receive radiation treatment closer to home. In the past, most patients diagnosed with cancer had to travel a long way to Port Macquarie, New Castle for their life-saving treatment, staying away from family for four to six weeks.

Moreover, Hurstville Private Hospital is set to send hearts racing with the announcement that they will now be offering a Cardiothoracic program at Hurstville Private Heart Centre in Sydney’s south. An extension of the established Cardiology program offered by the hospital, the new Cardiothoracic service will offer local patients best practice care and a range of treatments including coronary artery bypass grafting, aortic valve surgery, lymph node dissection, lobectomy and the removal of chest cavity tumours.

Robina Private Hospital launches Queensland-first binge eating disorder treatment program
Over 1 million people in Australia are suffering from eating disorder and misunderstanding. But now the patients can now go to general practitioners first and ask for referral to attend treatment program in Robina Private Hospital, Gold Coast, which is the first-of-its-kind program in Queensland.
The program is aimed at giving patients control over the compulsive excessive eating and extreme feelings of distress associated with Australia's most common eating disorder. The evidence-based eight-week program is one of only a few across Australia and is supported by an inpatient program as required to treat binge eating disorder, which is estimated to account for about 47 per cent of all eating disorders in Australia.
