Welcome to the new episode of Luye Discovery! Now we're heading to Healthe Care's two private hospitals in south Australia and New Zealand. Throughout the below brief introductions by the CEO of these two hopitals you will find series of local highlight activities.
• Marian centre
Marian Centre is delighted to now offer a weekly pet therapy session for our inpatients, through the Animal Companions service. This voluntary service allows Sue and her golden retriever, Kenzie to visit us for an hour every Tuesday afternoon to meet and greet, with all patients welcome to attend. Kenzie is only too happy to show off the tricks she has been learning – with a little food persuasion! – and enjoys lots of pats and attention.
Our pet therapy group not only draws both patients and staff together, but allows for light hearted conversation about pets and funny anecdotes. Kenzie responds to the voice prompt “visit”, then resting her head on someone’s knee to show affection. She loves it when people get down to her level and chat with her.
Pet therapy makes up part of our diversional therapy program where distracting, enjoyable and engrossing activities provide a welcome break from the current challenges people face. We are so thankful to be able to offer this, and value building our relationship with this community service.

• Abbotsford Private and Marian Centre
During April this year, our two West Australian facilities hosted two well-attended mental health events at Matilda Bay and BWG Applecross. They were the first of our series of eight interactive GP workshops in partnership with Servier aimed to upskill GPs; bridge the gap between primary and secondary care; drive the shared decision making process, and create active networks between mental health proficient GPs and their 'go to' psychiatrists at our facilities.
These events target our top cohort of mental health GP specialists, and encourage them to continue to, or commence supporting the Marian Centre and Abbotsford Private. Here, we also share and discuss the options of treatment as an inpatient or day patient, referral pathways and ease of patient appointments. These recent evenings generated lively, open debate and robust discussion amongst our 74 attendees, their peers and our consultants. Our first topic was the treatment of resistant depression, and series number

• Boulcott Hospital
Boulcott Hospital is proud to always support our local community and recently, we undertook a variety of activities to give back. This included donating surgical gloves to one of our local Kea Scout groups to help keep their little hands safe and clean at a recent community waterway rubbish clean up activity.
April 5 was Gumboot Day for national child counselling services and aptly, likens depression to walking through mud every day. Our fundraising donation to the ‘I am Hope’ charity will help provide free and timely counselling for kids in need. We also gifted our local Lower Hutt AFC football club first aid kits, which has over 850 football mad members from first kicks through to junior, senior elite and age group representation. These much needed kits are now on hand alongside the pitch at all games.
