SENTINEL NODE BIOPSIES INTRODUCED AT TUGGERAH LAKES PRIVATE HOSPITAL
Tuggerah Lakes Private Hospital has introduced a brand new Neoprobe machine for sentinel node biopsy. This is used in the treatment of breast cancer and melanoma. Intraoperative gamma detection uses gamma particles emitted by radioactive isotopes from within the body to pinpoint tissue during surgery. By targeting specific tissue, treatments and procedures can be minimally invasive, are associated with lower complication rates, and can lead to better patient outcomes.
Breast Surgeon, Dr Mary Ling, was first to use Neoprobe’s bluetooth wireless probe. “Patients diagnosed with breast cancer, who live in the northern Central Coast and lower Lake Macquarie regions, are now able to have their consultation and surgery locally. My patients are grateful to now have part of their treatment close to home, especially as they still have to travel for radiotherapy and chemotherapy.”
“We are proud to bringthis technology to the northern Central Coast, improving patient experience and outcomes locally.”

COLLABORATIVE BREAST CANCER SURGERY AT BRISBANE WATERS PRIVATE HOSPITAL
Dr Mary Ling (Breast Surgeon) and Dr Mihaela Lefter (Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon) worked collaboratively to offer breast cancer patients immediate breast reconstruction with an innovative procedure involving nipple sparing mastectomy and implant reconstruction with external oblique muscle flap.
Nipple sparing mastectomy involves removing breast tissue with preservation of the entire breast skin envelope including the nipple areolar complex. Following mastectomy, the external oblique muscle, the most superficial muscle of the abdominal wall, is harvested. The implant is positioned and covered by the pectoralis muscle and the ‘turned over’ external oblique muscle. The entire procedure is performed through a single incision, hidden in the inframammary crease, and with minimal long-term morbidity.
Initially described by Little in 1981 as a ‘living bra’, the external oblique muscle flap is useful in both immediate and delayed implant based breast reconstruction. Compared to the more commonly used surgical meshes that lack its own blood supply, the external oblique muscle flap can provide a more robust protection of the implants against complications (including infection, extrusion and capsular contracture) and achieve a natural breast shape (with reduced implant visibility and palpability).
“Having both Dr Ling and Dr Lefter work collaboratively for this ground breaking procedure, involving intricate reconstructive surgery, is fabulous for the hospital and the Woy Woy Peninsula community,“ said Kathy Beverly, CEO of Brisbane Waters Private Hospital.
$32 MILLION REDEVELOPMENT UNDERWAY AT GOSFORD PRIVATE HOSPITAL
Work has begun on the $32 million redevelopment of Gosford Private Hospital. The redevelopment will ultimately deliver 12 theatres, additional beds, an expanded Day Surgery Unit and recovery chairs, a new Maternity Ward, and investment in technology including the da Vinci Robot for minimally invasive Urology, Gynaecology and general laparoscopic surgery.
“The redevelopment of Gosford Private is an exciting opportunity for our staff, Doctors and the local Central Coast community. Having additional theatres, beds, a new purpose-built maternity ward and additional car parking allows us to continue to service our local community, with world-class facilities and a patient experience to match,” said Matt Kelly, CEO of Gosford Private Hospital.
Funded as part of Barwon Investment Partners’ recent acquisition of the Gosford Private property, the building works are being undertaken by Red Eye Construction, and are expected to take approximately 18 months to complete.

AUSTRALIAN-FIRST CARDIOLOGY TECHNOLOGY AT MULGRAVE PRIVATE HOSPITAL
On Thursday 6th February, in an Australian-first, Dr Matthew Swale, Cardiac Electrophysiologist of Genesis Care introduced new technology at Mulgrave Private Hospital reducing x-ray exposure to Cardiology patients. “This expands our ability to provide accurate diagnostic and ablation procedures to our patients without the use of radiation and reducing overall risks of exposure,” said Dr Swale.
During an Electrophysiology (EP) study and ablation, the Cardiologist will insert up to 5 catheters into the patient’s heart, to better understand where extra beats are coming from. The FAM DX software package allows the collection of clinical data with any of these diagnostic catheters when they are connected to the Carto3 mapping system, which is used for collecting and analysing key information related to the way a patient’s heart is beating. This increases the versatility of the Carto3 system and gives the physician greater flexibility in treating the patient’s condition.
