In this unique period of fighting the novel coronavirus epidemic, many heartwarming stories have happened in the Luye family. We give earnest thanks, as every small force gathered together becomes our weapon to win the battle!
Manufacturing Department: A creative transformation alleviates the shortage of masks – the fabrics of sterile workshop clothes were successfully repurposed to make re-sterilizable masks
For Shandong Luye, a subsidiary of Luye Pharma which has 1600+ employees, resolving the mask shortage is an urgent task for the resumption of work. How to improve the utilization rate of masks, reduce procurement costs, and quickly ensure everyone has a dedicated mask? These questions have been at the front of everyone's minds. Combining a large amount of wipe sampling data, we found that the barrier properties of sterile clothes often used in pharmaceutical production lines are long-lasting, stable, and demonstrate outstanding protection performance. So, under the initiative of the company's leadership, colleagues undertook a transformation plan to make re-sterilizable masks from the sterile workshop clothing, to great success.
The fabrics of the remodeled masks are made of easy-to-clean and sterilizable materials, which can be reused, and the rate of utilization is far more efficient than that of disposable masks. With this special transformation operation, colleagues in the Manufacturing Department saved a large amount of disposable mask resources to support other business units, and contributed to the company's overcoming the epidemic. We owe them thanks, the great "Transformation League of Legends"!
A Fruitful Daigou Trip to Thailand
On January 23, 2020, my family and I embarked on a trip to Thailand. On the day of departure, the airport had not yet entered the "mandatory mask" mode, and everyone seemed very relaxed. On the 25th, we learned from news reports that the domestic epidemic situation was already very serious. I quickly contacted Mr. Gong (General Manager of Luye Sichuan Co. Ltd) and told him I wished to help Sichuan Luye's colleagues by bringing some masks from Thailand. Mr. Gong was very keen and said that it would definitely help solve the urgent need for masks.
From the tour guide, I learned that masks were sold out in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Fortunately, the place I was staying in is a relatively remote town, so my guide and I drove to visit all the pharmacies in Krabi and snapped up thousands of masks!
We found "treasure" in the small Thai town
Packing masks at Thai airport Masks arriving in Chengdu
On the 28th, we packed the masks and returned to Chengdu from Krabi. The airport had at this point entered the “mandatory mask” mode and launched emergency procedures to check travellers’ health condition. The next morning I came to the company and gave the masks to Liu Dan from the administrative department of Luye Sichuan, who then distributed them to local colleagues at one box (50 units) per person.
Suitcase stuffed with masks Masks delivered to frontline workers
On the afternoon of the 29th, we had a few hundred masks left. When supplies became scarce, more people needed help, so I donated them all to frontline workers (particularly police stations). Finally, I would like to say, “Go Wuhan, Go China, We look forward to the dawn of victory!”

-Measures taken in Luye Singapore office&clinics
In our Luye Medical’s OncoCare clinics in Singapore, precautionary measures are taken to protect both our staff and patients following the Ministry of Health’s guide for the public healthcare sector. Doctors and staff are divided to anchor different clinics and cross-clinic deployments are not allowed. Staff are also not allowed to take leave and are required to take their temperature twice a day. Appointments that are less urgent are rescheduled to a later date where possible and the clinics are exploring the feasibility of delivering medication to patients. Patients who turn up for appointments are also required to fill in a health declaration form and to take their temperatures.
In Luye Singapore office, increased measures to disinfect and sanitise office by our cleaner especially areas with high human traffic including door handles, switches and meeting rooms were carried out.
PPE support from office with provision of disinfectant spray, masks, hand sanitiser, hand soap etc at the pantry for all colleagues to use. Apart from these, all colleagues are also required to take their temperature twice a day and submit the information to HR for tracking.
-Luye Medical: Psychological Assistance Hotline opened to help employees in need
Even more frightening than the epidemic is the flood of panic and anxiety. On January 28th, Luye Medical joined hands with Health100, Dr. Elephant, People's Daily Health App and Health Times to launch the "anti-epidemic psychological assistance hotline" service to provide free psychological counseling services to people affected by NCP, especially the front-line medial staff. The first batch of more than 30 psychiatrists and psychotherapists from Luye Medical's mental health brand Mindfront also joined the hotline service. Established under the guidance of a number of well-known psychiatrists, and relying on the ample resources of Luye Medical's 16 mental health hospitals in Australia, they used their professional knowledge and skills to fight the epidemic, warmed people's hearts with compassion, and fulfilled Luye’s commitment of “Passion for love " with their actions.
Doctor Hu Sanhong, the founder of Guangzhou Xinlin Medical, a subsidiary of Mindfront, is also one of the volunteers. He shared his experience and told us the important value of psychological intervention in major public emergencies:
Sharing real cases of psychological assistance:
"A young woman sought psychological counsel through the hotline: On the first day of the lunar year, after eating lots of fried foods, she had symptoms of coughing, itchy throat, and feelings of foreign matter, and even had trouble breathing during sleep. Her family was very nervous, and her neighbors tried to avoid her. She was particularly frightened, unable to eat and sleep well, and she felt discriminated against, and was reluctant to interact with others. Her mood became very low.
Following her description, I asked her in detail her medical history and contact history with people in the affected area, and learned that she has a history of “tonsillitis” for several years. She has previously had this condition of “breathlessness”. Compared with the past, it has not worsened. The city where she lives is not in the affected area, and she has not contacted people returning from there. I explained to her the important features of NCP, such as symptoms of fever, dry cough, and dyspnea, and the exposure factor. What she calls "breathing insufficiency" is not "breathing difficulty" in the medical concept, it is just that some ventilation is not smooth.
I told her that in this particular period, her worries and anxiety were right, but should be moderate; it is understandable to be wary of one’s own health. This is human nature, and she should try to accept it. In addition, I suggested that she actively seek treatment for her "tonsillitis" and consultation by a specialist. She ought to take the initiative to explain her actual situation to others, so as not to cause more misunderstanding or unnecessary trouble.
After listening to my advice, she realized that her worry was overdone, and she was greatly relieved, and laughed on the phone. She said, "I will follow the doctor's advice. I believe that this is just my old condition and I will get better!"
Lessons learned:
In the face of the sudden epidemic, many people have fallen into an unprecedented state of anxiety. As textbooks describe the term "anxiety": "Anxiety generally originates from a sense of loss of control of the surrounding environment” As a psychologist I realized that this tense atmosphere will only become more and more extreme in a short time, and psychological intervention must be given in due course. Previous experience in crisis intervention tells us that every time a public health emergency occurs, the affected people will experience different levels of psychological problems, and whether these psychological problems can be effectively resolved will also affect the progress of handling such public health emergencies. Fortunately, many colleagues also realized the importance and urgency of psychological intervention, and acted quickly.
-Staff Canteen Actions
While the epidemic situation has yet to subside and enterprises have resumed work, the safety of the canteen is vital to the health of all dining staff. During meal time, the canteen is one of the places with the highest density and mobility of personnel. It is therefore the top priority for canteen staff not only to stagger the peak period of dining to prevent cross-infection, but also to provide employees with plentiful meals of high quality and quantity. With the joint efforts of department leaders and all employees, emergency plans were drawn up.
From left to right:
-The dining area staff should ensure convection ventilation for 30-60 minutes before each meal, and thoroughly disinfect the floor, tables and chairs.
-Make use of eye-catching 6T management signs, remind employees of safe distances, and guide employees to line up in a safe and orderly way.
-Guide and supervise employees to strictly follow the safety management requirements after entering the canteen: wash hands, disinfect, line up and wear masks.
-To prevent cross-infection, a system of meal separation is employed at each step.
-Eat in batches and divided regions, encourage employees to eat at a single table, do not gather or chat, and leave immediately after eating
-For ingredients used in each meal-we use certified suppliers with authoritative qualifications and have fresh food delivered directly to the door every day to minimize contact.
"At present, the work of the canteen is progressing smoothly and orderly. We also want to thank the company leaders and various departments for their strong cooperation and guidance. The virus is still raging and the epidemic is spreading. In addition to the unified organization of government and company leaders, the task of epidemic prevention also depends on the conscious actions of everyone. Let's look forward to the day when we take off the masks, breathe freely, drink wine with friends, and embrace the vibrant spring!"
